Method of Madness

We have been married for a year and a half. We have lived in three different residences in that time. We have done our laundry differently in each place we've lived.

Method One. If you aren't familiar with The Chronicles of Our Apartment Part I and II and the ensuing, though thankfully short-lived, madness that resulted from our upstairs neighbors doing laundry in their sink, then you may not have realized we didn't have a washer or dryer. We most frequently did our laundry at the dorms at W&M. Since many of our clothes aren't dryer friendly and we didn't have a laundry room, we had to become rather creative when hang drying our clothes. After doing laundry our living room often looked like this:

(Although not visible, my favorite was probably the hanger tree... drape an article of clothing on one hanger and balance a hanger on either end (each also draped with an article of clothing), and place hangers on each end of those hangers... you get the idea.)
Method Two. A month after Addie was born we moved into the basement of some family friends in the DC metro area. They had both a washer and a dryer. Although it was a temporary living situation, and thus a temporary convenience... Doing laundry was heavenly.

Method Three. Our washer is as deep as a stack of 3 large Papa John's pizzas (man, that sounds soooo yummy!). I know you think I'm joking, but I really can't stress enough how small and shallow our washer is, and even though it hardly seems possible, they do carry/sell smaller units. But I digress. You see, to dry our clothes we sometimes do this:

It's not a bad method. My mom used to do pretty much the same thing during the summers of my childhood, and I still recall with fondness the smell of those line-dried clothes. The pitfalls of line drying in Almaty are: 1-Hanging out of a window four and a half stories high, 2-Dropping the item rather than clipping it to the line like you thought (it means your husband has to go down 4 1/2 flights of stairs to pick it up from the ground), 3-Having to plug your nose when you dress in said line-dried clothes, because although said clothes are clean, they don't smell good. There is not really such a thing as "fresh" air in a city of this size. I'm so completely serious.

Method Four. Wait a second. Four methods? Yes. You see, once the weather changes there comes a point when you can't hang your laundry outside. It's around the time when your apartment is freezing and you are anxiously awaiting the day when the city turns the heat on. Conveniently enough, the water heaters which warm your home then double as clothes heaters... Stack and heat until dry.

And in case your apartment is too dry, this works well as an alternative to a humidifier. Just what you always wanted, right? ;)

**Please note, this is post should be read as informative rather than whine-y. While handling an individual article of clothing up to as many as six times from start to finish of the laundering process is not my idea of a party, it's not THAT bad either. And I am learning, it could always be worse.**

The E Club

Now that Addie is in a walker she can, and often does, follow me around.

Watching her do this has caused us to reflect on some fond and funny memories (most are from Chris' spring break almost a year ago--he was at home alone pretty much all day the whole week, so when I returned from work he would follow me around the apartment and just want to be close to/near me).

All this talk has had Chris joking that he and Addie are my fan club, with Chris as President, of course. I have dubbed them The E Club.

Here's to the best and cutest fan club around. =D

A Bantling Toy

We were given this toy for Addie. She loves it and so do we. If you are current on our blogs it might actually look a tad bit familiar as it has been featured before (in her laughing videos... it is the object Chris was playing with to so thoroughly amuse Addie).

As if the toy itself wasn't enough fun, Chris and I have gotten a kick out of reading its box.

It's a little blurry, but on the left of the window for the toy it says, "Let us have a health and clever baby."

Also note the little red box on both the front and back. It says, "100% Safety Innocuity."

"Promote your baby's responses, as eye, feeling and sensibility. Exercise baby's cognition ability and language. at the same time, enhance baby's pleasure. Let us have a health and clever baby. Let the baby health and happy!"

The very bottom of this side (not pictured) states, "Let the baby to learning and know from the toys."

No explanation necessary. I hope.

"WARNING:
Do must let children play under the adult

Do not put small parts into the mouth, avoid eating

Do not touch the fire, it hasn't a function on ultraviolet radiation.

Please take note that the product may vary from the picture and the illustration of the package if the exterior a product the disposition and the specification is changed, excuse us.

Not suitable for children under 0 years due to small parts."

Zero
years?!?

Give Me Liberty...

"If a baby had the ability to move around freely, where would it choose to go? According to our latest case study, the answer to this question is: nowhere very interesting." -Chris

Addie has adapted well to the use of the walker as well as the freedom which it provides. We have enjoyed watching her discover it and explore the apartment. (My favorite part is watching her little legs move)

I love the combination of hiccups + wobbly walking! =D

She's drunk with love for her walker. Seriously.

Bath Time!

Addie is still enjoying bath time... which we are really grateful for!

Now that she's sitting up she enjoys trying to reach the drain plug.
I keep trying to interest her in splashing... to no avail (yet).

A Little Help With Laundry...

Generally speaking, our little one loves sitting in the laundry bin... every once in a while I carry her and the laundry around when I need to move from one room to another.

A Gnome Bear

Addie is quite a sight when we get her ready to go outside. Although she's not very fond of the process of getting dressed, she definitely loves the result: being outside. One of these days we'll snap a picture of her hat, in all it's foot-long glory (courtesy of our friends & neighbors, Aundrey & Anya)...

One of the funniest bits about her outside outfit is that once she is in it she can't really move. She'll sit on the couch, as pictured here, and move her eyes side to side watching us walking around as we finish getting ready to leave.

Our Little Runaway

Addie started crawling over a month ago. She is getting around much quicker these days. When she first began crawling she had a little difficulty with the coordination and often ended up going backwards before going forward. She is definitely moving forward these days and she tends to favor the army crawl (mostly using her arms).

The collages are courtesy of Picasa. We downloaded the program, available because of blogger & gmail accounts. It has some nice features, though it definitely takes a little time playing with the program to figure out how to get the product you want.

Because A Little Laughter...

Is good for you!

Chris took the first two videos while amusing Addie... so they are a little shakey.

I took the next one, and included a shot of what Chris was doing to evoke Addie's laughter.

Pity Me!

Lighten up your screens, this video is a little dark. We had Addie sitting in her stroller while we ate and talked with her... and this is some of what she had to say...

Sick and Tired

...of being sick and tired!

We've been sick since Monday. Addie is doing much better... her fever broke the morning of New Year's Eve, so all that's left is an occasional cough. Unfortunately I'm still a little under the weather which is why there haven't been any posts recently... we hope to "back in business" once I'm doing a bit better.
